'Quiet Light' forms part of Natalie Briney's 2026 collection - 'Light Between Two Worlds' a contemplative body of work exploring transformation, resilience, and the quiet threshold between what has been and what is yet to come.
In 'Quiet Light', a serene figure stands with her eyes gently closed and her hands held in prayer, while a leopard rests closely beside her. Their closeness feels instinctive and unguarded. She does not need to look toward the animal to know it is there; there is simply a gentle understanding between them.
The contrast between the two figures lies at the heart of the painting. Her closed eyes suggest surrender, introspection and trust, while the leopard's open gaze carries an unmistakable sense of awareness and strength. One rests inwardly while the other remains watchful, creating a gentle balance between vulnerability and protection, softness and power.
Rather than representing strength as something forceful or commanding, 'Quiet Light' considers the quieter forms of strength that accompany us through periods of uncertainty - inner knowing, trust, companionship, and the reassuring presence of something steadfast beside us.
The leopard becomes both companion and guardian. Powerful yet peaceful, its presence suggests that gentleness and strength are not opposites. There are times when the greatest sense of safety comes not from controlling what lies ahead, but from trusting that we do not have to meet every transition alone.
Flowing white hair surrounds the figure and moves across the composition, suggesting both movement and wisdom shaped through lived experience. Against it, the leopard's intricate markings create their own rhythm, while the oversized bow introduces an unexpected softness to an animal traditionally associated with strength and power.
Each work begins with a foundation of vintage music sheet paper, creating a subtle layer of memory and history beneath the painted surface. In 'Quiet Light', fragments of musical notation remain particularly visible through the woman's face, body and hands, allowing traces of what has come before to remain present within her.
Extensive hand-painted pointillism builds texture and movement throughout the work. Thousands of individual marks form the flowing strands of white hair, the leopard's patterned coat and the richly detailed gown. Layers of acrylic are followed by transparent oil glazes, bringing additional warmth, depth and luminosity to the surface.
The gown combines muted blue-grey with intricate copper detailing, its repeated organic patterns creating a sense of rhythm across the composition. These warmer metallic tones are echoed through the leopard's bow and areas of distressed gold leaf behind the figures, bringing the two together visually despite their contrasting forms.
The palette of warm parchment, copper, soft ivory and muted blue-grey creates a balance between warmth and restraint. Against the movement and intricate surface detail, the stillness of the two figures becomes even more pronounced.
While deeply personal, 'Quiet Light' speaks to the reassurance of knowing that strength can exist quietly. It does not always need to push us forward or demand courage from us. Sometimes it simply stays beside us - steady, watchful and present, until we are ready to move again.
In Natalie's words:
"As I painted 'Quiet Light', I kept returning to the contrast between her closed eyes and the leopard's watchful gaze. She doesn't need to be looking outward because, in that moment, she feels safe enough to turn inward. For me, the leopard became a symbol of the quiet strength that stays beside us through periods of change - whether we find that in another person, within ourselves, or simply in the feeling that we don't have to navigate everything alone."
Each piece within 'Light Between Two Worlds' offers a calm and grounding presence, inviting viewers to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with the strength that already exists within themselves.

Created on a 40 mm frame-wrapped canvas, sealed with fixative and finished with a triple gloss protective coat.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Natalie Briney is a Western Australian artist living and working on her family's farm south of Margaret River.
Surrounded by bushland, open skies and the rhythms of country life, her work is deeply influenced by nature, stillness and the quiet strength found in the everyday.
Her paintings are held in private collections across Australia, the United States, Europe and Asia.
