Ethereal Light is a quiet meditation on the light we carry within us — the part of ourselves that remains gentle and luminous even as we move through periods of change.
Her lowered gaze and hand resting softly over her heart suggest a moment of inward reflection, while her open palm speaks of surrender, trust and an openness to what is yet to come. Beside her, a single butterfly emerges against fragmented gold, a subtle symbol of transformation and the delicate beauty found in becoming.
Layers of vintage music sheet paper remain visible through her figure, connecting her to the memories and experiences that have shaped her. Intricate pointillism flows through her white hair and richly patterned gown, while areas of distressed gold leaf create a sense of something luminous appearing through an aged and imperfect surface.
Ethereal Light forms part of Natalie Briney's 2026 collection, Light Between Two Worlds — a contemplative body of work exploring thresholds: the quiet spaces between past and future, fragility and strength, the seen and the unseen.
Throughout the collection, serene and introspective figures inhabit an in-between realm where transformation gently unfolds. Flowing white hair and softened expressions suggest wisdom earned through lived experience rather than youth, while gold appears not simply as decoration, but as a quiet marker of illumination, protection and inner knowing.
Each work begins with vintage music sheet paper, forming a subtle textural foundation beneath layers of acrylic paint, intricate pointillism and metallic detail. Warm parchment tones, muted ivories, softened colour and aged gold create luminous, layered surfaces that invite the viewer to slow down and look more closely.
While deeply personal, Light Between Two Worlds speaks to universal experiences of change, vulnerability, endurance and hope. These works are not portraits in the traditional sense, but emotional landscapes - moments of pause where strength is found in softness and beauty emerges through transformation.
In Natalie's words:
“This body of work is about honouring the space in between. Where we are no longer who we were, but not yet who we are becoming. It’s a place of reflection, surrender, and light.”
